Not sure when to prune your trees? Dead, damaged, or hazardous branches can be removed at any time of the year for safety. If you’re dealing with a storm-damaged tree or a safety concern, it should be pruned/removed right away. The longer a dead or damaged tree sits, the more hazardous and unpredictable it becomes to remove.
Spring pruning
Spring is a great time to prune flowering trees (like magnolia or cherry).
Summer pruning
Summer pruning can help manage size and/or shape. With full foliage, it’s easier to assess tree shape and make the most effective trims for overall aesthetics. For optimal health and appearance, consider having your trees assessed by a tree expert before pruning, as if you cut too much of the canopy it will put the tree into distress.
Winter pruning
Winter is a great time to prune most trees. This is known as dormant pruning, and it comes with several benefits:
- Trees are dormant, so pruning causes less stress.
- Wounds heal quickly when growth resumes in Spring.
- Reduces the risk of pests and disease, which are less active in cold weather.
- Most deciduous trees and Fruit trees – pruning encourages healthy Spring growth and better fruit production.
